CC Sabathia is about to return to the Yankees’ rotation

DETROIT — After getting center fielder Aaron Hicks back from the disabled list on Thursday, the Yankees’ plan is for CC Sabathia to return to the active roster on Tuesday.

“I think Tuesday,’’ said Sabathia, who has been on the shelf since April 7 with a right hip issue he didn’t believed warranted a stint on the 10-day DL. “Bullpen [session Saturday] and come off.’’

Sabathia threw a bullpen session on Thursday and felt no discomfort. If he starts Tuesday against the Marlins at Yankee Stadium, it will be his third start of the season and first since leaving an April 6 game against the Orioles at the Stadium. He allowed three runs and five hits (three homers) in four innings.

“All is going well and I am excited to get the big fella back in our rotation,’’ Aaron Boone said before the Yankees’ 8-6 win over the Tigers on Friday night.

The manager needed a starter for Saturday and decided on right-hander Luis Cessa. Domingo German throwing three innings Thursday night against the Red Sox took him out of consideration, and Boone sounded like Cessa was the choice before Thursday night.

“That was the plan anyway. Had we been able to hold German maybe we would have had a decision but we were kind of looking at [Saturday] being Cessa,’’ Boone said.

Cessa has appeared in two big league games (no starts) this year and has worked two innings.
