How Kelly Dodd’s daughter is adjusting to a less lavish post-divorce life

Kelly Dodd and Michael Dodd’s 12-year-old daughter is adjusting to life following her parents’ divorce.

“Real Housewives of Orange County” star Kelly split from Michael for the second time in September 2017, and their 11-year marriage ended in divorce five months later. Fans saw Kelly downsize from their family mansion to a two-bedroom home as a result of the split on a recent episode of the Bravo show.

While Kelly, 42, seems to be handling the move well, she recently told Page Six that it took a toll on daughter Jolie.

“It’s four houses down the street from the house that I built,” she said. “It was really hard for her because she would walk by the house … It’s her home. And she goes to this two-bedroom old house.”

Now that they’re living a less lavish lifestyle, Kelly said: “Being a single mom and having my daughter grow up with a certain lifestyle with certain friends and having — all her friends are old money, so jet-plane, yachts, $30 million-dollar houses, boats, all that … She has grown up in this dichotomy — like it’s not normal. So I totally downgraded my lifestyle. She’s not accustomed to it. It’s hard for her. I take her to Aspen and it was like — I was staying with a friend, it was $1,000 a day for ski school. She has no idea about money.”

So, Kelly is teaching Jolie about real-world financial issues, telling us, “What I do is I take her and I show her, ‘This isn’t true, real life. You need to learn to be appreciative. Not entitled. You need to work hard,’ and I completely try to change her thought process a lot.”

She added, “It was really hard for her to adjust, and it was kind of sad for me to see her have to go through that, but it was actually a great learning experience for her because you know what — I don’t want her to be 20 and all of a sudden everything goes away. It was actually good for her. If you do it at 12 years old, you can really understand the reality of life and not be entitled.”

Kelly also told us that Bravo fans will get to see more of Jolie as the season goes on.

“She’s in musical theater academy and she’s done two plays so far,” she said. “One was ‘Bugsy Malone’ and the one that you’re going to see is ‘Oliver.’ So it’s very exciting. You’re going to see it from start to finish. I laugh at the kids which probably isn’t going to make me look good … I didn’t grow up that way, so I laugh and I’m just sarcastic by nature so people probably take offense to me more time than not!”
