Jeremy Irons gives crowd OK to doze off at poetry reading

Jeremy Irons, who just came out with the audiobook “The Poems of T.S. Eliot,” told fans they could fall asleep at a recent reading.

He admitted he sometimes falls asleep to poetry, and ahead of reading Eliot’s “Four Quartets” at the 92nd Street Y — on the same stage Eliot himself read it in 1950 — we hear Irons told guests, including Glenn Close, Laurence Fishburne and Melissa Errico, it would be perfectly OK if they or their neighbor “nodded off.”

A guest said, “He promised there would be a line or two that would jolt them awake.”

He also added, “I’m going to teach you something tonight.”
