This little girl has become the face of Syrian tragedy

This 7-year-old girl who barely survived a nerve gas attack on her village has become a symbol of the depravity of Syria’s dictator.

The child, Masa, and her twin sister, Malaz, had rushed with some 75 family members and neighbors to their basement when bombs began dropping, The Sunday Times of London reported.

Suddenly a man rushed in, frantically warned that the explosives carried lethal gas, and began screaming “everybody out!’’

The little girls were carried out by their mom, Amani, and an uncle.

“My whole body didn’t work,” Amani told the newspaper. “When I was climbing the stairs I could feel myself losing strength. I couldn’t control my body. The gas was spicy. Spicy in my throat like chili. I was vomiting and coughing. No one could breathe. Around me, people were just falling.’’

They barely made it to a clinic, where the twins got life-saving injections. Others were not as lucky.

“They were our friends,’’ Amani said. “They became numbers.’’
